Leaving the Room
What It Is
Physically leaving the space where an urge is happening, used to change the environment and interrupt the moment.
Leaving the room is a simple physical strategy: when an urge appears, the person gets up and walks out of the space, moving to a public or shared area or outside. The change of environment is described as interrupting the automatic chain that leads to use.
This is a community-reported strategy. Direct research is limited. Members commonly report it as most effective when used early, before the urge has built, and note that it is harder to apply late at night when leaving is less natural.
How People Use It
- Standing up and walking out when an urge appears
- Moving to a public or shared space
- Going outside for a few minutes
- Deliberately changing the physical setting
Evidence
